“Think acoustic Americana with Brazilian bossa nova. Drink a caipirinha, and enjoy the sounds that originated in warmer climates.” – The L Magazine

Singer/songwriter AVI WISNIA combines the classic sounds of the Brazilian Bossa Nova with pangs of soul, folk, jazz and pop to create a unique sound that is at once engagingly familiar and refreshingly new. With a versatile repertoire of well-crafted original songs, Avi Wisnia and his talented ensemble take the Brazilian influences and make them explode in a million different directions. A wordsmith as well, Wisnia’s clever lyrics pay a knowing nod to his contemporaries and offer a fresh perspective on issues facing his generation. In
conjunction with his original tunes, Wisnia reinvents classics from artists like Lauryn Hill, Radiohead, The Cure and Tom Jobim - stripping them down, taking them apart and reviving them with a new bossa spirit.

JAMIE LEONHART
Jamie's lithe and lyrical, three-and-a-half octave voice wraps around universe in which Kurt Weill and Laura Nyro meet Alice in Wonderland in a dimly-lit jazz club.  Born in New York City, the granddaughter of a cantor, and the youngest of three musically-curious children, Jamie began studying the violin at the age of three and singing soon after. Her inspiration to find her own voice began in her early teen years while singing in a vocal jazz ensemble, and at home foraging through her brother's expansive eclectic record collection. After graduating with a degree in English Literature from Barnard College, Jamie continued her musical journey: through leading a 'pop' band, to singing as a soloist in the New York Metro Mass Gospel Choir to performing as a solo artist at prominent New York venues and  drawing comparisons to the likes of Norah Jones, Feist, Madeleine Peyroux and even Sarah Vaughan, Leonhart continues to develop as an artist who refuses to be categorized.  With The Truth About Suffering (Sunnyside Records) she releases her most comprehensive and personal work to date.

DEIDRE RODMAN
An Idaho native, pianist/composer/singer Deidre Rodman moved to New York in 1997 to play for The Big Apple Circus after receiving a master's degree in Jazz Studies from the University of North Texas. She spent her free time going out to hear all the music she could. Soon she was playing and collaborating with many great musicians: reedist Roy Nathanson from The Jazz Passengers, bassist Steve Swallow, and vocalists Natalie Merchant, Nancy King, Darius De Haas, Debbie Harry, and Mike Viola (of Candy Butchers fame). She has released 3 CDs as a bandleader on the Sunnyside label and is currently working on her own pop CD. Another current project close to her heart is The Lascivious Biddies, an all female cocktail pop quartet which features 4-part harmonies.

Jamie and Deidre have been collaborating on some new material, as well as exploring older material through fresh eyes and ears.  This show will be an exciting celebration of this union (and an impromptu celebration of Deidre's birthday!)

7:30-9:00pm Kagero
Japanese Gypsy Rock Band

"Echoes of bossanova, Radiohead, Elvis Costello, everything sounds like this band should be performing in a Paris café to a room full of expatriates.                   -Ben Kreiger, Jezebel Music

Kagero's gypsy-flavored acoustic rock is knocking New York's indie scene on its tushy. The sound has been described as a melting pot of tonalities and rhythms from Asia, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. Kagero pulls their core rock sound from David Bowie and Neil Young, and adds the gypsy flavor of the violin found in the works of Stephane Grappelli. With a high-energy show that entices even the most jaded hipster into busting a gleefully bohemian move, Kagero's world music goulash is very tasty – even if you don't always know what's you're eating. Just call them your local neighborhood urban-gypsophonic, border-jumping, international debtor's prison groove-loving feelgood band next door
